Warmer weather and more sunshine can only mean one thing! Spring is on its way! Now is the time to get your vehicle ready for the upcoming season. Here are some service checks we recommend making sure your vehicle is in top condition. Cabin Air Filter This filter for your vehicle is very important and often ignored, but certainly shouldn’t be as we transition from Winter to Spring. This filter is inside the dash of the vehicle and filters the air that comes from outside to the inside of the vehicle. The cabin air filter should be checked during every oil change, as a standard and should be replaced every 10,000 – 15,000 miles. So, as the seasons change, be sure to have your cabin air filter checked to keep the air you breathe inside your vehicle safe. Air Filter Another important check for you to consider as we approach Spring is for your air filter. The air filter allows your car to breathe. The filter prevents any insects, dust, particles, and other debris from getting to the car’s engine. Also, this also ensures that there is a good mix of air and fuel to keep up vehicle performance. Therefore, this is important to keep clean so that your vehicle can continue running in top condition. A/C System Since we have been so used to the cold weather, our A/C has likely not been used in months. Be sure to have your A/C system checked when the warm weather arrives! You’re A/C may need a recharge to help keep you cool this Spring. Fuel System Last but not least, is a fuel system service. This is done to clean out the injectors and give you better fuel mileage. This type of service check usually includes the fuel pump, fuel filter or fuel injectors, although it could vary. October is Car Care Month, and that means it's time to think about getting your vehicle ready for the Winter months. You know the struggles - avoiding black ice, clearing the snow off your vehicle, and waiting for your vehicle to warm up. Follow these maintenance tips so you have one less thing to worry about when driving on those snow-covered roads. Check/Change your wipers Most wiper blades are only good for six months to a year, so if your windshield is getting streaky when it rains, now is the time to replace them. There are already plenty of risks during the winter months, and adding reduced visibility will only make it worse. While you're checking the wear of your current wipers, it's a good idea to top off your wiper fluid to keep your windshield clear of salt and precipitation. Check your battery During the cold weather, your battery slows down, causing your engine to require more current from your battery to the starter.  To avoid battery related car troubles this winter, check your battery terminals and wires for rust, cracks, and proper connections and have your battery tested to make sure it's properly charged and has enough power to handle the winter. Tire Pressure The cold weather can cause your tires to drop in pressure about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit that the temperature drops. When your tires have low air, it can affect the way our vehicle handles, increases the chances of a blown tire and decrease your fuel efficiency. So make sure they're properly inflated! You can check what the proper PSI for your vehicle's tires by looking at the sticker on the inside of the driver door. Tire tread & type Winter roads can be tricky between the snow, ice, and cold weather. This means that not only are your tires taking a beating, but they're also playing an extra important role in keeping you safe. Tire tread is what allows you to grip and not slide. Not only do you want to check the tread depth, but you also want to consider the type of tire you are using. Consider snow tires for passenger vehicles or all-terrain tires for trucks during winter. Have an emergency kit in your car Dealing with a flat tire, fender bender, or your car breaking down is stressful enough without adding the cold weather to the mix. Keep these items in your car to make these situations less stressful in case they do occur: jumper cables, water, warm blanket, first-aid kit, jack & tire iron, road flares or reflective triangle, flashlight, extra food, and some kitty litter or sand for traction in case you get stuck somewhere. Wintertime can be a beautiful and magical time of the year. Freshly fallen snow, warm nights by the fire, building a snowman, hot cocoa, and the holidays all make it a time to look forward to! Keeping up on the maintenance of your vehicle and preparing for the season ahead will ensure that you focus on those wonderful things without having unnecessary vehicle stresses. Should we pay attention to our tires as close as we monitor that gas gauge? Well, maybe not that close. But if your tires are having issues, your whole vehicle is in jeopardy. Here are three common problems and how you can avoid them. Irregular Wear: First thing is to check the tire tread wear. Tires will wear down with age and use. But the thing to keep an eye on is if they are wearing un-evenly or faster than they should be. That impacts fuel efficency, and increases your chance of blowing out a tire. Tires can wear unevenly because of several reasons: Tires are over-inflated or even un-inflated. Your tires air pressure is calculated specifically for your car and braking system to distribute the weight of the car. So tire pressure needs to be checked regularly. Your vehicle is out of alignment. This will cause tires to wear un-evenly. This can happen simply but hitting a pothole or a curb. You will not notice a difference right away with these tire problems but over time you will see that your tires are wearing unevenly. Or hopefully you don't experience a blow out. Punctures If your tire gets punctured, believe me, I know from experience... you will know. But you could also pick up a nail which will slowly deflate your tire. Whether its a large puncture or a slow leak you will need to have this repaired right away. Sometimes a large puncture can be repaired, but will usually end up in the purchase of a new tire. A slow leak usually can be fixed, but is important because moisture can cause decay of the steel belt inside the tire. Cracks Tires can also crack due to weather conditions and prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals. Take care of your tires and they will take care of you. Regularly check your tire pressure and dread depth to keep you safe and on the road!
